BREAKING: Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown kicked out of Conservative leadership race
Welcome to another edition of #munipoli Matters. As I write this some breaking news came down from the Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) of the Conservative Party of Canada…concerning the candidacy of Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown.
Quite simply put: Brown is out. He is no longer a candidate for leadership of the Conservatives when the party votes on September 10 to select a new leader.
According to Ian Brodie, the Chair of the LEOC, the Brown campaign appeared to “violate the financial provisions of the Canada Elections Act. Following our Rules and Procedures for the 2022 Leadership, the Chief Returning Officer notified the Patrick Brown campaign of the allegations and asked for a written response.”
To put it mildly, Elections Canada raised serious allegations of wrongdoing from the Brown campaign that did not appear to adhere to the rules and procedures for party leadership candidates under the Canada Elections Act.
Brodie added that “none of these problems has any impact on the integrity of the vote itself,” stating that there would be no further comment on this matter.
At this point, this is all the information available as of this writing. The Conservatives said they will be sharing the information gathered with Elections Canada later on, so more will come out.
For now, I’ll just leave you with these two tweets.
UPDATE: A statement from the Brown campaign has been released, saying they were not properly consulted by the CPC, that this move “disenfranchised over a hundred thousand Canadians” and that they would be talking to their lawyers.
